Warts

What are warts?

Warts are growths of the skin and appear in form of small, rough, flesh coloured bumps typically on hands and feet. They are benign skin growths caused by infection of human papilloma virus (HPV) and can become painful and irritating besides being cosmetically undesired. The three kinds of warts include:

  • Common warts - Typically appearing around the fingernails and on the back of the hands, but may grow anywhere on the body.
  • Planter or Foot warts - Found on the soles of feet, plantar warts often get into the deeper layer of skin because of the pressure caused by walking and standing.
  • Flat warts - These may appear anywhere but most typically on face, forehead and legs. They have a tendency to grow in large numbers.
A communicable skin condition, warts can spread from one person to another through direct or indirect contact and may also multiply on the body, infecting one area after another. People with weak immune system may be more vulnerable to warts. This problem is more common in children and young people than the middle aged and elderly.

What are the symptoms of this condition?

The signs of common and flat warts include:

  • Small, flesh like, grainy bumps rough in texture
  • Lesions that are skin coloured or in white, pink or tan
In case of plantar warts the symptoms can be in forms of:

  • Small, flesh like, grainy and rough lesions on the sole of foot
  • Thick and hardened skin on a well-defined area where the wart starts growing inward
  • Black pin point like marks on feet – these are small and clotted blood vessels
  • Lesions that break-off the normal ridges and lines on skin of foot sole
  • Tenderness or pain in walking or standing for a long time

What causes warts?

The different kinds of warts are developed by human papilloma virus (HPV). There are more than 100 types of HPV and while most of these cause relatively harmless common warts, there are few others that can go on to create serious problems like cancer of the cervix.

HPV can pass from one person to another and you may catch this wart virus by touching an object – such as towel, clothes, or plates – touched by someone who is infected. But in each person, the body’s immune system behaves differently against HPV virus. Therefore, not everyone who comes in contact with the virus can develop warts.

If any part of your body is affected by warts, the virus may spread to other areas. They usually spread through cuts on the skin. Nail biting can also cause warts to spread on the fingertips and around the nails.

Am I at risk of developing warts?

People who are at stronger chances of developing warts include:

  • Children and adolescents
  • People with weak immune system
  • People who have had organ implant treatments
  • People living with those who have warts
  • People who walk barefoot in areas such as public showers - where they are exposed to HPV virus

How to prevent this condition?

To reduce your risks of developing common and plantar warts, you can use precautions mentioned below:

  • Do not pick at warts and avoid direct contact with warts on your body.
  • If feasible, keep prominent warts covered with an adhesive bandage to prevent spread of further infection
  • Avoid shaving, combing, brushing, or clipping areas that have warts
  • If at all you need to use a pumice stone, nail clipper or emery board, do not use the same piece on area infected by warts as you use on healthy skin and nails
  • Wash your hands carefully after touching a wart
  • Keep your feet dry and clean – change socks daily before wearing shoes
  • Keep your hands dry as warts spread more easily in moist environment

Treatment at Skin Alive

Common warts usually respond to over-the-counter medicated creams or lotions based on salicylic acid and lactic acid. These work by peeling off the skin affected by warts.

Skin Alive’s advanced laser systems make wart removal safer and more effective. The localised stimulation of the immune system by the laser beam plays a valuable role in the elimination of resistant warts. The systems used in wart removal at our centres include:

CO2 (Carbon dioxide) Laser – The laser essentially vaporises the wart and causes it to burn and blister. Your body's immune response then kicks in and completes the destruction of wart while healing the skin from within. The fractional delivery system treats the skin selectively. With this the recovery period is also quicker and there is no pain during or after the therapy.

NdYAG Laser – Another high precision procedure, it is used to direct high intensity light beam directly on the pathogenic cells. The beam kills the virus directly and damages the blood supply that feeds the warts. The duration of laser’s action is between 30 seconds and two minutes for each wart as per its size and age. Local anaesthetic is used to make the laser therapy a painless process.

Cynergy PDL Laser-It is an advanced multiplex laser and very effective for treating resistant warts.
