What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin condition that usually affects ten percent of fair skinned people although it is more common in middle aged women. It develops in form of small, red, pus filled bumps on the face. The skin may also start to thicken and face starts appearing flushed. This is accompanied by a tingling or burning sensation. In certain cases, rosacea can also cause dry eyes and sore eyelids.

If timely treatment is not taken, the problem may worsen and symptoms begin to flare up. At times, rosacea is mistaken for acne, allergic reactions and other skin related problems. It is a long term skin disorder and remedies are used to control and bring down the symptoms. It becomes necessary to contact a doctor if the eye starts getting affected and there are problems in vision or pain.

What are the symptoms of this condition?

Rosacea typically attacks on face and neck. The signs include:

  • Frequent flushing of the face
  • Persistent redness on face resembling blush or sunburn that does not fade away
  • Swollen, lumpy red bumps that may contain pus or fluid and make the skin feel hot and tender
  • Telangiectasia or visible blood vessels on the face
  • Dryness and irritation in eyes, sensitivity to light or swollen and reddened eyelids – in some cases the eye symptoms may precede the symptoms on face
  • Thickening of the skin on nose causing it to appear bulbous (a condition called rhinophyma)
Usually rosacea is not painful or itchy but it produces a burning sensation on the affected skin. Persistent redness on the face becomes distressful and if it starts affecting the eyes or causes swelling, you need to consult your doctor for treatment.

What causes rosacea?

Rosacea is usually caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It may be a part of more generalised disorder of blood vessels. Hot and spicy foods or strong beverages including alcohol can aggravate this condition by increasing blood flow to the surface of the skin.

Extreme high or low temperature, exposure to direct sunlight and hot baths or saunas can also cause rosacea to flare up on the skin. Abnormal immune reactions are known to produce inflammation. Other factors include stress, anger and intake of some medicines that dilate blood vessels.

Am I at risk of developing rosacea?

Anyone can have rosacea but you stand a stronger chance of being affected by the condition if you:

  • Are a woman
  • Are fair skinned
  • Are in the age group of 30 to 60 years
  • Have a family history of rosacea

How to prevent this condition?

As in most other skin conditions, there is not much that you can do to prevent this problem but to avoid flare ups and prevent the disorder from recurring after a treatment, you should try to avoid the following:

  • Direct exposure to sun and wind
  • Emotional distress
  • Extremes of hot or cold temperature
  • Heavy physical exercises
  • Intake of alcoholic drinks
  • Spicy food and hot beverages
  • Sauna or hot baths

Treatment at Skin Alive

The treatment for Rosacea varies as per the signs and symptoms that affect an individual. Dermatologists prescribe antibiotic medications in forms of creams, gels or lotions that be applied on the affected area. Antibiotic drugs may also be prescribed as oral pills. If these do not work, acne medicines such as isotretinoin are recommended for some people. These can clearout acne like lesions that are formed by this disease.

Using strong home remedies and self medication for rosacea is not quite safe and a dermatologist or doctor must be consulted for well planned treatment.

Skin Alive has safe medications and topical creams that are prescribed by medical practitioners worldwide to treat this condition. Our bespoke laser therapies give you quicker relief from rosacea and we use these to treat severe or recurring forms of the problem. The system used in this therapy involves:

Nd: YAG and Cynergy Multiplex Laser - Cynergy laser has two wavelengths – a very powerful pulse dye laser and a 1064nm long pulse Nd: YAG laser. Both the wavelengths are ideal in treating vascular-related lesions and larger facial and leg veins. The final result is optimised by the combination of these and can give up to hundred percent relief from rosacea. The penetration depth of laser beams is greater and patient safety is also assured. This treatment does not have grave side effects as were seen with usage of some older pulse-dye lasers.
