Moles or Nevi

What are moles or nevi?

Moles, medically known as melanocytic nevus (the plural form being nevi) are natural and most common growth in human beings. These are either present by birth or appear in the course of life time. They are termed as melanocytic nevi as they are formed due to the growth of skin pigmentation cells called melanocytes.

The occurrence of nevi starts during childhood and reaches its peak in adolescence or early adulthood – most of the moles are formed during the first 20 to 30 years of life. The process weakens in old age. Moles may appear in different shapes and sizes. They also differ in colour from pinkish or skin colour to dark brown and black.

What are the symptoms of this condition?

A person may have around 10 to 14 moles on different parts of body. Some of these are very small and not really visible. Moles typically develop under the armpits, on the scalp, between the fingers and toes, and on the soles of the feet or palms of the hand. They can also grow under nails or anywhere else on the body. The surface of a mole is smooth, flat, wrinkled or even raised and the colour can vary. Signs and symptoms include:

  • Colour - Moles are often brown in colour but the colour of the bump may vary from black, red and tan to pink and skin toned. It can be colourless in some cases.
  • Shape - The shape of the moles differ. They may be round in shape, flat or slightly raised and can be hairy, smooth or spotty.
  • Appearance - Moles look the same over time but can vary drastically in their size. They can be as small as a head of a pin or more than 8 mm in diameter.

What causes moles?

Moles develop when cells in the skin start growing in a cluster instead of being spread throughout the skin. These cells called melanocytes make the pigment that gives the skin its natural colour and when they collect together it results in formation of a dark bump or spot.

The problem of moles can be hereditary and passed on from generation to generation. Some moles are inherited genetically and are predetermined prior to birth. The exposure to sunlight is another factor that affects the number of moles on your body. The amount of sun that you are exposed to especially during childhood also determines the number of moles that you will develop. The more sun exposure one gets, the greater the risk of developing moles.

Am I at risk of developing moles?

The factors that put you at high risk of developing moles are:

  • Genetics - The contribution that genes make is the most basic risk factor for the growth of moles. The kind of moles a person develops is determined genetically because this problem often runs in families.
  • Extreme exposure to sun - Spending a lot of time in the sun and in the process being exposed to the ultraviolet (UV) radiation, is a factor causing development of moles. This usually happens with excessive sun exposure during childhood and teenage years.
  • Fair Skin - Though fair skin is not essentially a risk factor for the development of moles, it is believed that moles are more common and quite prominently visible in fair-skinned people.

How to prevent this condition?

The growth of moles can be prevented by taking some precautions mentioned below:

  • Avoid exposure to the harsh sunlight especially during midday.
  • Use sunscreen with SPF of at least 15 or more and wear large sun glasses to protect yourself from the harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun.
  • Cover yourself well with long sleeved outfits, wide-brimmed hats, and accessories that keep your body safe from the UV rays of sun.

Treatment at Skin Alive

Most of the moles on the body are harmless and require no treatment. However, they can be surgically removed in case a mole

  • Is a suspected case of melanoma or cancerous growth
  • Is located in an area where it is bothersome such as cheeks wherein a shaving razor might irritate it, or on the scalp where it is touched by hair brush bristles
  • Becomes a cosmetic concern
Organic and chemical mole removal creams are commonly used for the treatment. Other procedures include laser therapy, excision, cryosurgery, and electrocautery. Skin Alive has proven laser techniques for removal of benign and malignant moles. Our laser procedures are monitored by experienced dermatologist to ensure minimal discomfort and rapid recovery for patients. The system we use for mole removal includes:

CO2 (Carbon dioxide) Laser - It is used to vaporise skin layer by layer without causing any cuts. This is a treatment choice available for moles, birthmarks and skin damaged by the harsh sunlight. The epidermis or the top layer of skin is removed using a knife made of light energy. The dermis or the deeper layer of the skin is exposed to and heated by the laser beam that stimulates the production of collagen protein so as to help repair the damaged skin.
