Hyperhidrosis

What is Hyperhidrosis?

A medical condition that causes too much sweating, hyperhidrosis can interfere with a person’s daily activities. Sweating is necessary when there are messages from brain that the body temperature is high but at times there may be excessive perspiration that can drain energy and cause difficulty in performing daily activities.

Extreme physical activities, exercises and excessive amounts of certain hormones do cause sweating. However, if you have hyperhidrosis, sweat glands tend to overreact to stimuli and may also be generally overactive to produce more sweat than is necessary.

What are the symptoms of this condition?

Excessive sweating from face, underarms, hands, palms or sweat literally dripping from body are the signs of hyperhidrosis. You may also notice the following symptoms:

  • Visible beads of sweat on skin even when climatic conditions are not very adverse, or you are not exerting yourself.
  • Difficulties in daily activities because of sweating - for instance problem in walking, difficulty in holding a pen, or working on computer.
  • Skin turning soft, white and flaky in areas of excessive sweating
  • Skin infections like jock itch and athletes foot

What causes hyperhidrosis?

There are certain nerves that signal the body to sweat and excessive sweating is possibly caused by the overreaction of these nerves. Stress, anxiety and over activity of hormones can also cause more than normal sweating. Research is still on to find other likely causes of abnormal sweating.

Am I at risk of developing hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is not a contagious disease but it may run in families. You may have this condition if:

  • Your work involves intense physical activity
  • You suffer from a medical problem such as diabetes, gout, a tumour - that causes sweating.
  • A medicine or food supplement that you may be taking activates sweat glands.
Hyperhidrosis is not necessarily related to living conditions – you may live in hot or climate, it can affect you if there are other circumstances as mentioned above.

How to prevent this condition?

The causes of hyperhidrosis are related to abnormalities of sweat glands or hormonal imbalances and some of these cannot be fully prevented. It is wise to consult a dermatologist for treatment and medications. At the same time, you can use some of these tips to control excessive sweating:

  • Use an antiperspirant instead of an ordinary deodorant or perfume and also apply it before going to bed
  • Keep a note of situations that trigger sweating and avoid the ones that you can.
  • Avoid heavy intake of foods / beverages that contain monosodium glutamate. These include potato chips, frozen dinners, rich gravies, ranch dressings and salty flavoured snacks. Alcohol and the caffeine in coffee, chocolate and tea may also trigger sweat glands and should be avoided.
  • Wear light cotton clothes and comfortable sandals instead of shoes whenever possible.

Treatment at Skin Alive

Medical treatment for hyperhidrosis involves the use of prescription medications and antiperspirants approved by your dermatologist. At times, surgical techniques are employed to remove some overactive sweat glands. Sympathectomy is a form of special surgery for treating the disorder.

Botulinum toxin or BOTOX® injections are now used to control excessive sweating especially from underarms and Skin Alive also has this procedure for treatment of hyperhidrosis. BOTOX® injections temporary block a chemical that stimulates the sweat glands in the body. You will notice results in four to five days after receiving the treatment. Reduced sweating lasts for four to six months and sometimes even longer. If the problem of excessive sweating returns, you can take another dosage of BOTOX®.

We also have safe and proven medications that make your sweat control more effective and long lasting.
