Hidradenitis Suppurativa

What is hidradenitis suppurativa?

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a skin disorder where clusters of chronic abscesses, epidermoid / sebaceous cysts, or pilonidal cyst infect body parts that bear sweat glands. The areas that rub together - such as underarms, skin under breasts, inner thighs, groin, and buttocks - are most commonly affected by hidradenitis suppurativa. This disease is not communicable.

The cysts or lumps developed by HS are also known as acne inversa. These can be very tender and may last for years. There may also be intermittent periods of inflammation that can culminate in cuts and drainage of pus from the cyst.

What are the symptoms of this condition?

Hidradenitis suppurativa can impact a single area or several parts of the body. Its signs and symptoms include:

  • Blackheads or deep acne like cysts
  • Excessive pimples
  • Red, tender lesions that often get bigger, break open, and discharge pus that may have unpleasant odour. Itching, inflammation and excessive sweating may accompany the lesions
  • Painful, pea-sized hard lumps that develop under the skin and may persist for years if not treated
HS typically develops post-puberty with a single, painful lesion that stays for longer than a week and then causes other symptoms. Obesity, stress, hormonal changes and excessive sweating may worsen hidradenitis suppurativa.

What causes hidradenitis suppurativa?

Hidradenitis suppurativa usually develops due to hair follicles becoming blocked and inflamed. The cause of this blockage is not known but numerous factors – such as hormones, genetics, smoking and obesity – can play a role in its development.

HS may also develop if a person’s immune system overreacts to plugged hair follicle.

Am I at risk of developing hidradenitis suppurativa?

Hidradenitis suppurativa affects about one percent of the population. Factors that put you at increased risk of this disease include:

  • Age – the disorder is more common in young adults.
  • Gender – young women and girls are more likely to be affected by HS than men.
  • Genetics – the tendency to develop HS may be inherited.
  • Obesity – overweight people tend to develop this condition faster than others.
  • Smoking – if a person already has tendency for HS, smoking puts him/her at higher risk.

How to prevent this condition?

As hidradenitis suppurativa is caused by changes within the body and not due to external factors, it cannot be prevented. But you can take precautions to avoid aggravation of symptoms:

  • Wash the affected area with antiseptic soaps or bath additives recommended by your dermatologist.
  • Avoid wearing tight outfits.
  • Quit smoking.

Treatment at Skin Alive

There is no cure for HS. But timely treatment helps to control the symptoms. As per the individual condition of a patient, the medications prescribed by doctors may involve antibiotics and corticosteroids.

Incision and Drainage -When your hidradenitis suppurativa involves a single and small area, surgical drainage may be an option even though it provides only short term relief.

Deroofing – Using this procedure, your doctor cuts away skin and flesh that mask any interconnecting tunnels that link two lesions. But the problem may relapse in the area of treatment or another part of body.

Surgical removal – Doctors use invasive surgery treatment for HS when it is necessary to remove all of the infected skin. A skin graft is then required to close the wound. Once again, there are chances that the disorder may resurface.
