Dermatomyositis

What is dermatomyositis?

Dermatomyositis is a muscle disease that also causes skin inflammation and rashes. Although it is an uncommon skin condition, it impacts children and adults alike. Children between 5 and 15 years of age, and adults in 40 to early 60s age group are more likely to be affected by the problem. Females develop this condition more often than males.

A type of inflammatory myopathy, dermatomyositis creates scaly, dry and rough skin. If not treated early, it has tendency to cause more damage to muscles, blood vessels and lung tissues.

What are the symptoms of this condition?

Common signs and symptoms of dermatomyositis include:

  • Purple reddish skin rashes on face, elbows, knees, chest and around eyelids, near nails.
  • Progressive muscle weakness, stiffness and hurting pain in legs, shoulders, arms or neck.
  • Painful and colour changes in fingers especially in cold weather.
  • Difficulty in swallowing solid or liquid food.
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Excessive itching on the scalp
It is advisable to visit a doctor when muscle weakness is accompanied by joint pain and purple or bluish red rashes on skin. Prolonged dermatomyositis is also associated with several other health complications including cardiovascular problems, lung diseases and cancer.

What causes dermatomyositis?

The cause of dermatomyositis is still unknown but the disorder has several characteristics in common with autoimmune diseases where a person’s immune system starts attacking his/her own body tissues. It may also be caused by a bacterial or viral infection.

Am I at risk of developing dermatomyositis?

Although this muscle related problem can occur in anyone and at any age, you may at stronger risk if you suffer from connective tissue disorders including:

  • Lupus erythematosus
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Scleroderma
  • Diabetes mellitus (in children)

How to prevent this condition?

The underlying causes being natural, prevention of dermatomyositis is not really possible.
