Dermatitis / Eczema

What is dermatitis?

Dermatitis is the medical term used to describe inflammation of skin. It involves itchy rashes on swollen, sore and reddened skin surface. At times blisters that cause itching or bleeding may also appear with atopic dermatitis or eczema. Dandruff or rashes produced due to contact with some metals or poison ivy are also the effects of dermatitis.

It is a common skin disorder and not contagious. But it usually makes you feel uncomfortable or self-conscious so a good treatment is recommended.

What are the symptoms of this condition?

Dermatitis can take different forms and their signs differ as per the condition that affects an individual. The symptoms include:

  • Atopic dermatitis (eczema) – Red and itchy rashes occur on skin parts that flex such as behind the knees, inside the elbows and front of neck. If scratched, the rash may ooze fluid and may get encrusted.
  • Contact dermatitis – Rashes that appear due to contact with substances causing allergic reactions may produce burning sensation, itching and blisters.
  • Seborrheic dermatitis – In this condition red rashes appear with yellowish and rather oily scales typically on scalp and at times around ears and nose. Seborrheic dermatitis results in dandruff. In babies, it is referred to as cradle cap

What causes dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis usually occurs with allergies and affects people who have asthma or hay fever. Contact dermatitis is caused by contact with irritants and allergens found in poison ivy, jewellery containing nickel, some detergents, perfumes or cosmetic products. Seborrheic dermatitis is triggered by the natural oils present in oily skin or hair, and it may be just a seasonal problem. Hereditary factors also play a role in its development.

Am I at risk of developing dermatitis?

Like other skin diseases, dermatitis can affect anyone but you are at a higher risk of

  • Atopic dermatitis – if you have a personal or family history of hay fever or asthma.
  • Contact dermatitis – if your work exposes you to certain metals, cleaning agents or solvents.
Furthermore, infants are at a stronger risk of being affected by atopic dermatitis.

How to prevent this condition?

If you have a tendency for dermatitis or already have mild symptoms of same, avoid dryness of your skin. Here are some ways to minimize skin dryness:

  • Don’t use very hot water for bathing and limit your time in bath tub/ under shower to about 15-20 minutes.
  • Use mild soaps or herbal ingredients that can clean skin without stripping it of natural oils. Antibacterial and deodorant based soaps tend to cause more dryness.
  • Apply a moisturising lotion while your skin is still wet to seal in the moisture.
  • Keep your skin well hydrated by drinking plenty of water through the day.
