Blistering Disorders

What is blistering disorder?

Skin blistering disorders or simply blisters appear in form of raised spots that are filled with fluid. These seem like bubbles on skin surface. The fluid inside them may be serum, plasma and in some cases even blood or pus. Mostly produced by harsh rubbing – for instance by an ill-fitting shoe – blisters may also be a sign of other skin ailments. So they can emerge with some skin rashes and inflammatory conditions that include autoimmune diseases.

The word blister is actually a modification of the Old French term "blostre" that implied a leprous nodule.

What are the symptoms of this condition?

The signs and symptoms of blistering skin disorder include:

  • Bubble(s) on skin filled with clear liquid – the size of bubbles varies from pin point size to bigger than an inch in diameter
  • Pain, redness, inflammation or itching on the bubbles

What causes blisters?

Blisters can appear with friction or when a layer rubs against bare skin - for instance a hard wooden or plastic handle against the hand, a new pair of footwear against heels or toes, and some jewellery on any part of body. Extreme temperature through steam, boiling water or a hot material can also result blistering. At times sunburn or exposure to other kinds of radiation may become a cause of this disorder.

Chemicals, detergents, cosmetics, and certain toxins released by insects or plants can lead to blistering on skin – these are known as contact dermatitis. Some people get blisters in a reaction to oral and topical drugs. Autoimmune diseases - Pemphigus vulgaris, Bullous pemphigoid and Dermatitis herpetiformis are the common syndromes that cause this problem on different parts of the body. Furthermore, contagious ailments including chicken pox, shingles and cold sores commonly produce multiple blisters on skin and/or in mouth.

Am I at risk of developing blisters?

As blisters appear due to a number of reasons, they can affect anyone but the risk increases for people who:

  • Work on sites with heavy exposure to chemicals, heated solutions and strong radiation.
  • Wear tight or uncomfortable shoes /sandals for long periods.
  • Have sensitive skin but use a lot of cosmetic or make-up products.
  • Apply strong topical medications on skin without medical prescription.

How to prevent this condition?

Some simple precautions for your skin can help to prevent blistering problems:

  • Wear well fitting and comfortable shoes with socks that keep feet clean and dry.
  • Apply talcum powder on skin to reduce friction produced by new footwear and accessories like gloves.
  • Use sunscreen with SPF of 15 and more before stepping out in sun.
  • While working with or around chemicals, cover your exposed skin properly and wear gloves.
  • Check with your dermatologist before using a strong skin cream for cosmetic or medicinal reasons.
